Ingredients
To make Bajra Idli, you will need:
- 1 cup Bajra (pearl millet)
- 1/2 cup Urad dal (split black gram dal)
- 1/2 tsp Fenugreek seeds (methi seeds)
- Salt to taste
- Water (as needed)
Instructions
Step 1: Preparation
- Wash and soak: Wash the bajra, urad dal, and fenugreek seeds together. Soak them in water for 6-8 hours or overnight.
Step 2: Grinding
- Grind: Drain the soaked bajra, dal, and fenugreek seeds. Grind them together to a smooth batter consistency, adding water as needed. The batter should be similar to regular idli batter.
Step 3: Fermentation
- Ferment: Transfer the batter to a large bowl. Add salt and mix well. Allow it to ferment overnight or for 8-10 hours in a warm place until it doubles in volume.
Step 4: Steaming the Idlis
- Prepare steamer: Grease the idli molds with oil or ghee.
- Steam: Pour the batter into the molds and steam the idlis for about 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Step 5: Serving
- Serve hot: Remove the idlis from the molds and serve hot with coconut chutney and sambar.
Tips and Variations
- Nutrition boost: You can add grated carrots or finely chopped spinach to the batter for added nutrition.
- Texture: For softer idlis, ensure the batter is well-fermented and the steaming time is adequate.
