Ingredients
To make Bajra Khichdi, you will need:
- 1 cup Bajra (pearl millet)
- 1/2 cup Split yellow moong dal
- 1 small Onion, finely chopped
- 1 small Tomato, finely chopped
- 1 Green chili, slit
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- A pinch of Asafoetida (hing)
- 2 tbsp Ghee or oil
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups Water
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions
Step 1: Preparation
- Wash and soak the bajra in water for 6-8 hours or overnight.
- Wash and soak the moong dal for 30 minutes before cooking.
Step 2: Cooking
- In a pressure cooker, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and asafoetida.
- Once the seeds splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Add the tomatoes and green chili, cooking until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
- Stir in the turmeric powder.
- Drain the soaked bajra and moong dal, then add them to the cooker.
- Pour in the water and add salt to taste. Stir well to combine.
- Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook on medium heat for 4-5 whistles, or until the bajra and dal are fully cooked.
Step 3: Serving
- Once the pressure releases naturally, open the cooker and stir the khichdi well.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot, accompanied by yogurt or pickle.
